How the roofing estimate works

Roofing is measured in squares, where one square is 100 square feet, or about 9.29 square metres, of roof surface. Standard three tab and architectural shingles run about three bundles per square. Enter the actual sloped surface area, not the building footprint, then add 10 percent for waste, ridge, hip and starter courses.

On the roof? A good pair of knee pads makes a long day on a pitched roof far less punishing.

Common questions

How many bundles of shingles for a 2000 square foot roof?

2000 square feet is 20 squares. With 10 percent waste that is 22 squares, or about 66 bundles at three bundles per square.

Is roof area the same as house square footage?

No. Roof area is the sloped surface, which is larger than the floor area because of the pitch. Measure the actual roof planes or apply a pitch multiplier.
