Material Delivery and Ordering Tips

Practical tips for ordering and receiving bulk material deliveries, from access to unloading.

A smooth delivery saves time and avoids damage. A little planning before you order pays off.

Before you order

Measure access width and overhead clearance for the truck, and pick a clear, firm drop spot. Confirm the supplier's load sizes and the density of aggregates, since tonnage per cubic yard varies. Order with your waste allowance already included.

On delivery day

Be there to direct the drop, protect the driveway from staining with a tarp under bulk piles, and have help and a wheelbarrow ready to move material before it sets or scatters. For ready mix concrete, have your forms and crew set up first, because the clock starts the moment it arrives.

Common questions

Should I include waste in my order?

Yes. Order the quantity you will actually use, which should include a waste allowance, not the bare theoretical amount.

Who unloads a bulk delivery?

Bulk aggregate and mulch are usually tipped in a pile that you move yourself. Confirm with the supplier when ordering.
