Deck Stain Coverage Guide

How much deck stain a job needs, how coverage varies by stain and wood, and counting the railings.

Deck stain coverage varies more than paint, so measure carefully and read the can.

Measure the whole deck

Start with the deck floor area, length times width. Then add the railings, balusters and any stairs, which together can add a surprising amount of surface.

Coverage varies

Transparent and semi transparent stains soak in and cover more area per gallon than solid stains, which sit on the surface. New or rough wood drinks far more than smooth, previously coated boards. Coverage on the can is a starting point, often 200 to 400 square feet per gallon, so treat it as a range.

Coats

Most stains call for one to two coats. Buy enough for the planned coats plus a little extra, since a second trip mid project risks a colour mismatch.

Common questions

How much does a gallon of deck stain cover?

Often 200 to 400 square feet, but it varies widely by stain type and how thirsty the wood is.

Do I count the railings?

Yes. Railings, balusters and stairs add significant surface beyond the deck floor.
